The Clayton State University School of Graduate Studies next open house will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 9. The open house will run from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in room 101 of the University’s Harry S. Downs Center on the main campus in Morrow.

The Clayton State School of Graduate Studies typically holds open houses on the second Tuesday evening of each month. This month’s open house will provide information on the newest Clayton State graduate program, the Master of Science in Psychology, in addition to giving prospective graduate students the chance to learn more about the Master of Arts in Liberal Studies, Master of Arts in Teaching English, Master of Arts in Teaching Mathematics, Master of Business Administration (which now has cohorts meeting in Peachtree City and Conyers, in addition to the Clayton State campus), Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Nursing and Master of Archival Studies.

GSU receives Department of Education grant for international business education

Georgia State University has received a $188,000 Business and International Education grant from the Department of Education to establish a Southeast regional alliance of higher education institutions in seven states.

This comes on the heels of GSU’s $1.52 million award to establish a Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) in the J. Mack Robinson College of Business. Members of the alliance of two- and four-year colleges, including historically black colleges and universities, will work to improve core courses in international education.

The alliance also will assist in preparing faculty to teach international business and strengthen the links between businesses and schools on matters related to international education.

Besides Georgia, the regional alliance includes Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The project will be implemented by faculty of the Institute of International Business in the Robinson College.

“This grant, resulting from a very competitive review by DOE, will complement the work of CIBER in providing programs and activities to improve the scope of international business education in our region,” said Tamer Cavusgil, the Fuller E. Callaway professorial chair and director of Robinson’s Institute of International Business.

There are about 600 two- and four-year colleges in the Southeast. The alliance could potentially benefit more than 160,000 students. Also benefitting will be the business community which will have access to a pool of business school graduates with knowledge of the increasingly complex global business marketplace.

The list of consortium schools by state to date includes: Alabama A&M University, Atlanta Metropolitan College, Clark Atlanta University, Clayton State University, Darton College, East Georgia College, Gainesville State College, Georgia Perimeter College, Morehouse College, South Georgia College, Mississippi Consortium for International Development via Jackson State University, Tuskegee University, Shaw University, Winston-Salem State University, and Hampton University.

Campbell School Lauded for Quality of MBA Program

The MBA program offered by Berry College’s Campbell School of Business has been honored for excellence by The Princeton Review. This is the third consecutive year that the Campbell School has been featured in The Princeton Review’s annual publication recognizing top business schools nationwide.

“We are pleased to recommend the Berry College Campbell School of Business to readers of our book and users of our site, www.PrincetonReview.com, as one of the best institutions they could attend to earn an MBA,” stated Robert Franek, senior vice president for publishing at The Princeton Review. “We chose the 301 business schools in this book based on our opinion of their academic programs and offerings, as well as our review of institutional data we collect from the schools. The Campbell School is one of 66 schools in the book that appear on one or more of the book’s ranking lists.

Changing face of U.S. workforce propels GSU’s new Executive Doctorate in Business program

As American executives grow older – and live longer – many are looking to lengthen their careers well into their golden years but find their MBA degrees only take them so far.

As a result of this trend, Georgia State University’s new Executive Doctorate in Business degree program – where the average student is age 47 -- received double the number of applications than it had actual slots in the four short months since the program was unveiled. A total of 25 percent of those accepted into the program will travel a great distance to attend classes, including from California, Connecticut, and Arkansas.

“Our target class size is 21 and we received such great response to the program, we put some on next year’s waiting list,” said Maury Kalnitz, director of the Robinson College of Business Executive Doctorate in Business program. “We enrolled 21 students with incredible backgrounds, including from Fortune 500 companies.”

The Executive Doctorate in Business at GSU is one of few programs of its type in the nation. The three-year GSU doctorate program is practitioner-focused and designed to equip executives with advanced skills they can bring back to their respective workplaces. By comparison, other doctoral programs focus on careers in academia.

“I’ve been interested in pursuing a doctorate for years but a program didn’t exist that was less than four or five years,” says Jim O’Connor, a 45-year-old from Greenville, S.C. who owns his own consulting company and begins the program later this month.

He added, “The focus of the program is very exciting to me. I plan to develop my research skills, apply those skills, build credentials and a professional network, and change the focus of my business to an environmentally sustainable one.”

Several of GSU’s top scholars in business will be teaching in the program, including Lars Mathiassen, academic director of the Executive Doctorate in Business program, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, and co-founder of the Center for Process Innovation at the Robinson College of Business; and V. Kumar, executive director of the Center for Excellence in Brand and Customer Management and the Richard and Susan Lenny Distinguished Chair in Marketing.

“It used to be that after you reached a certain age, there were no more educational opportunities,” said Kalnitz. “They may be at the top of their career ladder, but executives need to go further, to learn how to apply research methods to practical problems in ways that benefit their companies, as they remain in the workforce longer.”

University of West Georgia Doubles MBA Enrollment

The Richards College of Business at the University of West Georgia doubled enrollment in their Master of Business Administration program this year with a total of 140 registered students.

According to Dr. Jon Anderson, associate dean and MBA director in the RCOB, the business administration degree plays a significant role in providing education for working managers in the West Georgia region.

“Through recent innovations in pedagogy, course scheduling and curriculum, the MBA is now more effective and accessible than in the past,” said Anderson. “These improvements have led to increased enrollments and a stronger influence on the business environment in West Georgia, Atlanta and other places in the world our graduates now work.”

The RCOB offers the MBA program at the Carrollton campus, the Newnan Center and through the Georgia WebMBA online program. MBA classes include learning how to communicate professionally in written and oral presentations, ethical decision-making and using technology effectively on the job.

The Carrollton and Newnan campuses offer the option of evening classes for the non-traditional students in either a full time or part time schedule. The Georgia WebMBA also offers a flexible schedule of round-the-clock access.

The RCOB is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business International (AACSB), a distinction achieved by fewer than fifteen percent of business schools worldwide.

The business college is also one of approximately four percent of schools with separate AACSB accreditation for the accounting program and has received recognition from The Princeton Review as one of America’s Best Value Colleges in both 2007 and 2008.

Georgia State University Announces 2008 Bergeron Scholarship Recipients

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business today announced this year’s recipients of the Bergeron Women in Technology Leadership Scholarship. The 2008 recipients are Jessica Wrenn, senior; Melissa Lamoureux, senior; Kia Rainey, senior; Tamara Roper, junior; and Catherine Mickle, sophomore.
