Financial Times ranks Robinson Executive MBA 26th in U.S., 78th worldwide

Rankings released by the Financial Times (FT) place the Executive MBA (EMBA) at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business 26th among U.S.-based programs and 78th worldwide.

The rankings, limited to the world’s top 100 programs, are based on program, student and faculty information such as alumni satisfaction and changes in their salaries, faculty and cohort diversity, thought leadership by faculty (research productivity), and international experiences in the program.

In faculty research productivity, based on the number of faculty publications in 45 international academic and practitioner journals, the Robinson College is 26th among U.S.-based programs and 46th worldwide.

The Robinson EMBA is 6th among U.S.-based programs and 33rd worldwide for international course experience, defined as coursework conducted outside the country in which the program is located. A hallmark of the Robinson College EMBA program is its international business residency. Each cohort travels to a host country for an intense immersion experience into business and culture. Past residencies have included study in China, India, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Argentina, Spain, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Greece and the Netherlands.

According to Dean H. Fenwick Huss, “The FT rankings are indicative of the Robinson College’s stature as a leading resource for global executive education and our faculty’s leadership in advancing the theory and practice of international business.

"Noting that in 2010 the Robinson College was awarded a Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) and that Georgia State was awarded a Confucius Institute," Huss said. “Our ability to offer programs that advance the understanding of international business and global markets will continue to increase.”

Dave Forquer, assistant dean for executive programs, added, “Our position among the best EMBA programs in the world confirms that the Robinson College delivers on our promise to develop global business leaders."

The Robinson College Executive MBA is 17 months in duration. On average, students in the EMBA cohort possess more than 15 years of business experience. The program first made the Financial Times EMBA rankings in 2003 and has been on the list for seven of the past eight years.

Robinson to launch Executive Master’s in Finance

Beginning in January 2010, Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business will offer an Executive Master of Science in Finance with a specialization in corporate finance. It will be the first such program offered in Atlanta.

Designed for rising as well as mid-career finance professionals who seek to expand or update their functional knowledge, Robinson’s Executive MS-Finance is a one-year, three-semester program. Class size will be limited and students will proceed as a cohort-a structure that fosters peer learning and collaboration.

“We developed the Executive Master of Science in Finance in response to market demand for an accelerated degree program in finance,” said Jane. F. Mutchler, Robinson associate dean for academic planning and programs.

“A traditional master’s program takes, at minimum, two years to complete,” said Mutchler. “In today’s uncertain and changing economic environment, many professionals want to shorten the time it takes to complete their studies in order to apply their knowledge and acumen more rapidly.”

The rigorous, 30-hour curriculum was created and will be taught by the faculty of Robinson College’s Department of Finance. Renowned for their broad experience in research, executive education and practice, they also teach in the college’s top-10-ranked MBA program for working professionals.

Robinson’s Executive MS-Finance will be offered at Georgia State’s Executive Education Center in Buckhead and will meet every Monday evening, every other Wednesday evening and three Saturday mornings per semester. Applicants should possess four or more years of full-time work experience during which they have demonstrated potential for managerial advancement. They must also hold a four-year undergraduate degree. For additional information, please visit http://robinson.gsu.edu/finance/execms.htm.

The largest business school in the South and part of a major research institution, the J. Mack Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University is located in Atlanta, an epicenter of business and a gateway to the world. With programs on four continents and students from 150 countries, the college is both worldwide and world class. Its part-time MBA program is ranked number seven in the nation and has been in the top 10 for 14 consecutive years. The college has 200 faculty, 7,400 students and 65,000 alumni.

Noted for an emphasis on educating leaders, the Robinson College of Business and Georgia State University have produced more of Georgia's top executives with graduate degrees than any other school in the nation.

The University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business will offer a strategic Project Management Certificate in Leadership, Planning and Execution at the Terry Executive Education Center in Atlanta, beginning in October.

The nine-day, three-course executive program offers managers the opportunity to learn how to consistently initiate, plan and execute major projects with the potential to transform how their companies do business.

Terry’s Office of Executive Programs is teaming with Advanced Strategies Inc. to teach managers how to achieve better results in areas such as day-to-day leadership, business accountability, dynamic planning, strategic alignment, critical thinking and focused execution.

“We are delighted to be working with a top organization like Advanced Strategies,” said Charlie Squires, director of executive programs at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business. “Our institution is seeing increased demand for project management courses, as individuals face strong competition for fewer available jobs, and companies struggle to do more with less and still make a profit. · Project Management: Execution, which covers project oversight, managing risk and leading vs. managing.

Courses will be offered Oct. 6-8, Nov. 3-5 and Dec. 8-10. The Initiation and Launch course and the Planning course can also be taken independently.

With offices in Atlanta and St. Paul, Minn., Advanced Strategies is a PMI Endorsed Global Education Provider and ensures that each course aligns with PMI knowledge areas. Participants must earn 63 contact hours and 6.3 Continuing Education Units to earn Project Management Certification.

Changing face of U.S. workforce propels GSU’s new Executive Doctorate in Business program

As American executives grow older – and live longer – many are looking to lengthen their careers well into their golden years but find their MBA degrees only take them so far.

As a result of this trend, Georgia State University’s new Executive Doctorate in Business degree program – where the average student is age 47 -- received double the number of applications than it had actual slots in the four short months since the program was unveiled. A total of 25 percent of those accepted into the program will travel a great distance to attend classes, including from California, Connecticut, and Arkansas.

“Our target class size is 21 and we received such great response to the program, we put some on next year’s waiting list,” said Maury Kalnitz, director of the Robinson College of Business Executive Doctorate in Business program. “We enrolled 21 students with incredible backgrounds, including from Fortune 500 companies.”

The Executive Doctorate in Business at GSU is one of few programs of its type in the nation. The three-year GSU doctorate program is practitioner-focused and designed to equip executives with advanced skills they can bring back to their respective workplaces. By comparison, other doctoral programs focus on careers in academia.

“I’ve been interested in pursuing a doctorate for years but a program didn’t exist that was less than four or five years,” says Jim O’Connor, a 45-year-old from Greenville, S.C. who owns his own consulting company and begins the program later this month.

He added, “The focus of the program is very exciting to me. I plan to develop my research skills, apply those skills, build credentials and a professional network, and change the focus of my business to an environmentally sustainable one.”

Several of GSU’s top scholars in business will be teaching in the program, including Lars Mathiassen, academic director of the Executive Doctorate in Business program, Georgia Research Alliance Eminent Scholar, and co-founder of the Center for Process Innovation at the Robinson College of Business; and V. Kumar, executive director of the Center for Excellence in Brand and Customer Management and the Richard and Susan Lenny Distinguished Chair in Marketing.

“It used to be that after you reached a certain age, there were no more educational opportunities,” said Kalnitz. “They may be at the top of their career ladder, but executives need to go further, to learn how to apply research methods to practical problems in ways that benefit their companies, as they remain in the workforce longer.”

Financial Times Ranks the Executive MBA Program at UGA's Terry College of Business Among the Top 25 in the U.S. and Top 60 in the World

The Executive MBA program at the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business received its highest ranking to date in a global survey published Oct. 27 in the Financial Times, one of the world’s leading business news organizations.

The Terry Executive MBA is ranked 22nd in the United States and 59th in the world, according to the Financial Times’ annual ranking. The Terry EMBA made the most significant improvement of any program ranked the past two years, rising 18 spots in this year’s ranking. Emory’s Goizueta Business School is the only other ranked executive MBA program in Georgia (18th in the U.S., 53rd in the world).

Terry’s “Career Progress” rank was third highest nationally and 13th in the world. This measurement calculates the change in the level of seniority and the size of the company graduates work for now versus the period before they entered the EMBA program.

The average salary reported by graduates three years after completing the program was $153,750, which ranked 19th among U.S. business schools. Similarly, Terry ranked 20th in average salary growth when 2005 graduates were asked to compare their current salaries with their pre-EMBA salaries.

Terry’s Executive MBA program was established in 2001. The program moved to its current location at the Terry Executive Education Center in Buckhead in 2005.

“As a relatively new program in Atlanta, the Terry EMBA is already well known for quality,” said Terry College Dean Robert T. Sumichrast. “Most gratifying in the Financial Times survey were the high scores reported by our EMBA graduates who were asked how their careers had advanced since completing the program and how well they had fulfilled their goals when they set out to get an MBA.”

For the measure “Aims Achieved,” the Terry EMBA ranked 22nd in the world and seventh best in the United States. The “aims achieved” measurement quantifies the extent to which EMBA graduates reported fulfilling their most important goals for pursuing an MBA.

“The Terry EMBA emphasizes personal leadership development and the practical application of management concepts and skills to real business settings,” said Richard Daniels, director of the Executive MBA program. “The rankings illustrate that such an approach creates value for employers and has a real impact on the career trajectory of our participants.”

Now in its eighth year, the Financial Times ranking is compiled using data from two sets of surveys. One is completed by alumni who graduated three years ago from the EMBA programs the Financial Times considered for the ranking. The other survey is completed by the business schools.

The Terry College’s Executive MBA degree is an 18-month program based in Buckhead, geared toward mid-level professionals to senior managers. The format combines weekend class sessions with asynchronous interaction using distance learning technologies. The program offers personalized service, individual leadership coaching, and a 12-day international residency.
